Laptop Fan Making Loud Noise

Hey everyone,

My laptop fan has suddenly started making a loud grinding noise. It's an HP Pavilion, a couple of years old. I've tried cleaning the vents, but it didn't help. Is it safe to open it up and check the fan, or should I take it to a professional?
