Hey folks,
I just read up on some big changes coming to Dragon Age: Veilguard, especially concerning our lovely, disgusting Darkspawn friends. If you haven't seen the latest, it looks like Bioware is shaking things up with how the Darkspawn are gonna be portrayed in the new game, and I'm still on the fence about it.
From what I gather, the devs are aiming for a more nuanced approach to the Darkspawn, trying to make them more than just the usual mindless baddies we’re used to. There’s talk about exploring their origins, motivations, and even some new abilities that’ll make them a bit more unpredictable. I get what they’re going for – trying to add more depth to the lore and make the enemies more engaging. But, like, is this what we really want?
I’ve always loved the gritty, dark fantasy vibe of Dragon Age. The Darkspawn were these relentless forces of evil, pure nightmare fuel, and part of me thinks that’s what made them so compelling. Adding layers and “complexity” might dilute what made them so terrifying in the first place. I mean, do we really need to empathize with them? Or understand their “struggles”? I kinda liked them just being the creepy, monstrous threat in the shadows.
On the flip side, I know a lot of folks are probably hyped about this. It’s definitely a bold move and could lead to some interesting storylines or character arcs. And hey, maybe I’m just stuck in my ways and need to embrace the change. But I guess my worry is that they might lose that core essence of what made the series so good by trying to “modernize” or over-complicate things.
