RDR2 Memory Leakage Issue: How to Spot It and a Temporary Fix

Hey RDR community, there’s been some buzz about a “memory leakage” issue affecting Red Dead Redemption 2. If you’re experiencing serious lag whenever you switch tabs while playing, you might be dealing with this problem.

What Is "Memory Leakage" in Gaming?
Memory leaks happen when a game doesn’t release memory it no longer needs, leading to wasted resources and potential crashes. It’s a common issue that can really mess with your gaming experience.

How to Tell If You’re Affected:
When you’re playing RDR2, if you notice significant lag when switching tabs, that’s a sign you might be facing this memory leakage issue.

Temporary Fix Found by Reddit User "u/DinosaurInAPartyHat":
Here’s a temporary workaround that might help until Rockstar addresses it in a future update:
  1. Open RDR2.
  2. Select story mode, but don’t start playing.
  3. Hold the "Z" key to go to settings in the main menu.
  4. Navigate to 'Graphics.'
  5. Press and hold "X" to start the benchmark test.
  6. Press "Enter" to accept.
  7. Wait through the loading screens.
  8. When you see a snow scene at Colter with some numbers ticking, after 5 seconds, hit the return key and exit the test.
  9. Your game should now run normally.
Keep in mind, you’ll have to repeat this process every time you play until Rockstar fixes it.

Let’s hope Rockstar addresses this soon!

I'm experiencing the same problem, but it's happening in Story mode, and I haven't played Online yet.

My typing works fine in different browsers and even in Notepad. However, when I open RDR2 Story mode and use Alt+Tab to switch to other apps, the typing becomes delayed, though my mouse movement remains normal.

I had the same issue and eventually found a fix. It turned out that having Voice Chat turned on was causing the lag for me. I went into Settings, then Audio, and switched Voice Chat to Off. Give this a shot—it might solve the problem for some of you too.
